Guidelines for Sending Questions to The Photo Gurus

The Photo Gurus show is meant to be your personal resource for answers to all kinds of questions related to photography and imaging. To help Daniel and Sally provide you with useful answers, please keep your questions specific, including the following information:

  • What you are trying to achieve.

  • What equipment or software you currently use.

  • What problems you have encountered and when or how they occur.

  • Any other details that relate to why you are asking the question.

What is the Best Camera?
(or scanner, printer, software?)

Often, people want Daniel's and Sally's advice on what camera to buy. That question asked alone with no further information is like asking what is the best shoe. Your camera needs to fit your shooting interests, subjects, shooting style and lifestyle. Therefore, if your question is "What is the best camera for me?", please be sure to include the following information:

  • What camera do you currently use? What do you like about it, and what don't you like about it?

  • What are your typical subjects? Please be as specific as possible. (i.e. children playing soccer, wildlife at night, closeups of flowers, etc.)

  • How do you plan to use your pictures? For instance, do you want to make snapshot prints, create large exhibition quality prints, use them on the Web or share via email, put them in a business newsletter or in a slide show?

  • How much money do you want to spend?

  • Are you interested in taking control over the process? In other words, do you like to use shutter speed and aperture controls? Or, do you want something that is automatic and doesn't have a steep learning curve?

  • Are you interested in a camera that has separate interchangeable lenses (a DSLR), or do you want the lens to be permanently attached to the camera body?

  • Are there particular features or capabilities that you want your new camera to have?

  • What cameras have you been considering? What attracts you about them and what doesn't?

  • What size camera would fit your lifestyle and shooting style? How do you plan to carry it around? In a big camera bag, a purse or briefcase, in the pocket of your tight jeans?

  • Any other details about how you plan to use the camera, who will be shooting it, your interests and photographic knowledge that you feel will assist Daniel and Sally in providing recommendations.

If you are asking for advice on other products, such as a scanner, printer or software, please provide similar details, to help Daniel and Sally provide you with the most useful answers.
